WOODLAWN, Ill. (KFVS) - Interstate 64 is back open after Illinois State Police responded to two separate crashes on Friday.

According to ISP, I-64 opened back up at around 4:40 a.m. on Saturday, March 29. The first crash happened at around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28. This was in the eastbound lanes near milepost 64 by Woodlawn.

They said traffic was slowing and a semi-truck, for unknown reasons, hit the rear of another tractor-trailer in front of it. The second semi, driven by a 44-year-old man from Texas, then struck the rear of a passenger vehicle, driven by a 58-year-old woman from Marion, Ill.

According to ISP, the driver of the first semi died from his injuries. He was a 67-year-old man from North Carolina and was reportedly hauling approximately 200 batteries. The Mt. Vernon Fire Hazmat Team responded to assist.

Later that night, at around 7:30 p.m., ISP responded to a separate three-vehicle crash with injuries in the westbound lanes near milepost 59 by Nashville.

They said traffic was stopped due to the backup of traffic from the first crash by milepost 64.

A passenger vehicle reportedly struck a van from behind, which then struck the rear of a passenger car.

Four people were seriously injured as a result:

  • The driver of the first vehicle, 38-year-old Stephen Noe of Olmstead, Kentucky, had to be flown to a regional hospital.
  • The driver of the second vehicle, 35-year-old Allyson Hudnall of New Harmony, Indiana, and a 10-year-old child in the van were also flown to a regional hospital.
  • The driver of the third vehicle, 30-year-old Precious Greer of Alton, Ill., was transported to an area hospital.

The road blockage lasted through the night and into the early morning hours on Saturday.
