Tom Brady took a break from making waffles to go through the long list of injuries he’s had on his right throwing hand.
That includes a middle finger that’s so busted that he can no longer extend it all the way. You can actually see the New England Patriots legend unable to extend his finger in the photos above.
Brady showed off his battle scars during a recent video on his YouTube page in which he participated in a cooking challenge with chef and YouTuber Nick DiGiovanni. While removing hot waffles from an iron, Brady impressed DiGiovanni by having “chef hands,” meaning he could handle hot objects without flinching.
The cameraman asked if there was a correlation between “football hands” and “chef hands.” Brady took a moment to explain that his hands took plenty of punishment during his NFL career.
“These fingers got pretty beat up over a long period of time. See that finger?” Brady said, showing his right middle finger. “Can’t even bend that finger anymore. Torn ligament.”
Brady proceeded to go down the list of injuries his right hand has sustained:
- Torn ligament in his middle finger
- Torn ligament in his middle finger
- Broken bone in ring finger
- Palm “Ripped open” near his thumb
The most notable of those injuries was the last one. Brady had a gash on his hand after hitting a buckle on the helmet of teammate Rex Burkhead during practice. Brady manages to make it back on the field for the AFC Championship Game four days later. However, the injury remained a factor heading into Super Bowl LI.
Brady and the Patriots were tight-lipped around injuries during his career. The long-time quarterback was famously resilient during his 23 NFL seasons. Since debuting as a starting quarterback in 2001, the only time Brady missed a game due to injury was when he sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 of the 2008 season.
As for the cooking competition, Brady cooked waffles while DiGiovanni made pancakes. Brady’s son, Benjamin, acted as the judge in the video.
While Benjamin ribbed his father for a sloppy application of whipped cream, he gave Brady an average score of 8.75 between taste and presentation. DiGiovanni got an average score of 9.75, but last a point due to the pancakes being less healthy. The quarterback and the chef agreed to settle on a tie.
