Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Are Allegedly Skipping Out on This Huge Event

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have been all around the world together — from her Eras Tour shows in Australia to the 2024 Super Bowl in Las Vegas to their recent Coachella weekend in the California desert — but it looks like there is one upcoming event they won't be attending.

According to Us Weekly, "Taylor and Travis are not going to the Met Gala. They passed," a source told the outlet on Friday, April 19, hours after Swift dropped her surprise double-album, The Tortured Poets Department. "They might go as it gets closer, but for now, they are not going."

The 2024 Met Gala falls on Monday, May 6. Three days later, on May 9, Swift kicks off the European leg of the Eras Tour in Paris, where she'll play four shows in four days. (Swift will then go on to tour the rest of Europe and the U.K. before circling back to the United States, ultimately concluding the run in Canada in December.)

While Kelce has never attended a Met Gala, Swift's appearances at the biggest fashion event of the year have not only made headlines — they've also made it into her carefully curated lyrics.

Swift's 2018 Reputation track, "Getaway Car," seemingly depicts the moment at the 2016 Met Gala where she fell for Tom Hiddleston towards the end of her rocky relationship with Calvin Harris.

"The ties were black, the lies were white / In shades of gray in candlelight / I wanted to leave him, I needed a reason," she sings on the first verse of the song. At the time, a widely-circulated video of Swift and Hiddleston was released, showing a platinum-haired Swift and the Loki actor hitting the dance floor hard to T.I.'s "Bring 'Em Out."

"I sat next to her at dinner that night. She was very charming," Hiddleston later told MTV UK. "She is amazing."

While Harris and Swift soon had a tumultuous breakup — with the Scottish DJ later slamming her on X (formerly known as Twitter) — she and Hiddleston went on to date that summer before splitting after three months.

But the 2016 Met Gala wasn't just about Swift's relationships with Harris and Hiddleston — it was also the same event where she met Joe Alwyn. In fact, she appears to reference their own meet-cute on Met Monday on another Reputation song, "Dress."

"Flashback when you met me / Your buzzcut and my hair bleached," she sings on the sultry track. (While Swift styled her hair in a short, platinum bob, Alwyn did indeed rock a buzzcut at the gala.)

Swift and Alwyn went on to date for six years, following the singer-songwriter's breakup with Hiddleston. The Grammy winner and the Harriet actor called it quits in spring 2023, with Swift quickly rebounding with (and soon splitting from) the 1975 frontman Matty Healy.

Swift and Kelce, meanwhile, began dating later that summer — a romance beloved by fans, their families, and, of course, the couple themselves. Earlier this year, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end traveled to Swift's concerts in Singapore and Australia, while she supported him at as many Chiefs games she could go to (including the 2024 Super Bowl). Just last weekend, Swift and Kelce were on hand — and in the middle of the crowd — to support her collaborators Ice Spice, Jack Antonoff, and Lana Del Rey at Coachella.
