Overview

Over 6.4M people in Somalia are facing acute water shortages as a result of a severe drought caused by consecutive seasons of poor rainfall performance. The current Deyr season (October – December) started late and poorly distributed across most parts of Somalia. Between January to November 2022, WASH Cluster partners have reached over 2.1M drought affected people with clean and safe water through emergency water supply. WASH partners have also enabled 571K people with sanitation services and supported 1.7M people with sustained water supply (such as rehabilitation and construction boreholes and shallow wells). To contribute to the overall efforts of reducing the spread of AWD/Cholera, WASH Cluster partners continued to promote hygiene among vulnerable communities and distributed hygiene kits, reaching approximately 2.5M people.

Despite the massive increase in WASH response, the prolonged drought is aggravating the crisis and needs continue to grow. With only limited rainfall amounts expected until the coming 2023 Gu rainy season, drought conditions are expected to have a lasting impact on livelihoods in the coming months. As a result, WASH Cluster partners should urgently prepare themselves to scale up their interventions in response to water crisis. Urgent and more sustainable mid- to longer-term WASH investment to tackle water shortages is required.
