'Upon initial evaluation, it also appears the ponies are uninjured,' the department added. Medical staff responded immediately as did the expert horse handlers and veterinarian who staff all games. We are grateful that the injuries were not serious and for the staff members who responded so well.
Former NFL star Reggie Bush took to his Twitter to share his reaction at the blunder.
He joked: 'Oklahoma was trying to drift the horse carriage #FastAndFurious.'
But not everyone found the incident funny, with PETA sharing footage of the spirit squad members being launched onto the field.
'Exploiting animals for sports is unnecessary & incredibly dangerous for animals AND humans,' PETA said in a tweet.
'@OU_Football: KEEP HORSES OFF THE FIELD.'
The little snafu wasn't a distraction for Oklahoma, however, who managed to bear West Virginia 52 to 14.
