Patriots suspend Pro Bowl defensive lineman Michael Bennett, reports say
The New England Patriots have suspended veteran defensive lineman Michael Bennett, according to multiple reports.Ian Rapoport and Michael Giardi, both of the NFL Network, said Bennett has been suspended one week by New England for conduct detrimental to the team.Bennett provided the following statement to ESPN's Jordan Schultz regarding his one-week suspension:"On Friday, I had a philosophical disagreement with my position coach that has led to my suspension. I apologize to my teammates for any distraction this may have caused."The three-time Pro Bowler was not present for Tuesday's Patriots practice.The 33-year-old is in his 11th NFL season and his first with the Patriots. He previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks.He won a Super Bowl title with Seattle in 2014.The Patriots acquired Bennett from the Eagles in a March 14 trade. Philadelphia sent Bennett and a 2020 seventh-round draft pick to New England in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round draft pick. So far in 2019, he has played in all six of New England's games with one start. He has recorded five total tackles and two-and-a-half sacks this season.In his previous 10 NFL seasons, Bennett racked up 327 tackles with 63 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and six passes defended.He has also tallied 43 tackles, four-and-a-half sacks, four passes defended, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 12 career postseason games.
