Auburn going to Super Bowl, Alabama's streak in jeopardy

New England Patriots defensive back Brandon King tackles Tennessee Titans cornerback Adoree' Jackson on a kickoff return during an NFL playoff game on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, in Foxborough, Mass.

Auburn will be represented at Super Bowl LII no matter which teams win the NFL's conference championships on Sunday. The Tigers will have former standouts on both sides of the field when the Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots square off for the AFC's spot in the Super Bowl.

Four colleges can do Auburn one better, though. With alumni on the active rosters on all four of the teams left in the NFL's championship chase, Florida, LSU, Michigan and Oklahoma are assured of having a Super Bowl winner.

Michigan has the most former players on the active rosters of the four Super Bowl contenders with eight.

Auburn alumni still playing in the NFL's postseason are running back Corey Grant of the Jaguars and cornerback Jonathan Jones and defensive back Brandon King of the Patriots.

Thirty-two Auburn alumni have played in the Super Bowl, and 16 were members of the winning team, including Jones and King with New England last year.

Seven other colleges will have alumni coming in from the AFC side of the bracket regardless of the final score of the Jaguars-Patriots game - Clemson, Georgia, Illinois, Miami (Florida), Ole Miss, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles will square off for the NFC championship. In addition to the four programs assured of having a Super Bowl winner, other colleges that will be sending at least one player to the big game from the NFC title contest are Cincinnati, Connecticut, Florida State, Maryland, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon State, Southern Cal, TCU, Texas and Virginia.

Alabama has had a former player in the Super Bowl for 13 straight years, but that streak is in jeopardy this season. The Crimson Tide has four former players remaining on active rosters in the postseason - guard Chance Warmack of the Eagles and defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, offensive tackle Cam Robinson and running back T.J. Yeldon of the Jaguars.

Because Philadelphia and Jacksonville are in different Super Bowl semifinals, it's possible Alabama will have zero, one, three or four alumni on the field in Super Bowl LII on Feb. 4.

Alabama has had 40 alumni play in the Super Bowl, with 28 on the winning team, including a current streak of five years with a winner.

West Alabama, with New England cornerback Malcolm Butler, also still has an alumnus in the Super Bowl tournament. Butler is the only former West Alabama player with Super Bowl experience, and he's played for two championship teams in his previous three seasons in the NFL.
